The challenges of geography have inspired a set of innovative solutions for Health and Social Care in Sicily. Tele-consultations enable highly specialised services – incl. home care – tailored to the needs of patients and professionals. Enabled by a partnership among the Region of Sicily and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) – a global integrated health enterprise and USA-based health care leader – ISMETT is a research hospital providing integrated medical services with a focus on transplantation for the South of Italy and beyond.
The visit featured a comprehensive workshop programme offering unique insight into this and also into other partnerships for innovative health services in Euro-Mediterranean regions.
- Monday 26 September, 13:30 - 18:30 h: Participants gained inspiring insights into innovative services at ISMETT, such as Tele-consultation networking Intensive Care Units (Tele-ICU), Telepathology and Teleradiology. Executives/Physicians from UPMC (Pittsburgh, USA) were present on site and via video link. Hosted by the site visit, a public webinar featured a Global Panel on the new Health-IT EU-US-Memorandum of Understandings’ Work-stream on Innovation Ecosystems, highlighting the Transatlantic eHealth/Health IT Cooperation as additional enabler for innovation in Digital Health (cf. registration/participation link below).
- Tuesday 27, 09.00 - 13:30 h (at ISMETT-UPMC Office, Via Discesa Dei Giudici 4, Palermo): Participants enjoyed an in-depth introduction to Integrated Care in Italy and the exchange of lessons learned with other regions in the Mediterranean area. ISMETT demonstrations part II focused on Integrated Telemedicine in Paediatrics and Integrated Home Monitoring. Regions in Italy, but also other countries like Croatia demonstrated how to scale up innovations e.g. in the framework of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Health Ageing (EIP on AHA) and to embed telehealth as a routine service into day-to-day healthcare (U4H).
