⏺️Transforming care delivery, including with AI
On care delivery, teamed with AI, read the latest from EHTEL’s 2026 Briefing Paper, two pieces of work done by WHO Europe and a WHO Working Group, the work of EHTEL member – Merck together with Syntropy, and the COMFORTage and Laurel projects tackling digital data-sharing.
Innovation is perceived as one of the key areas of potential in the European Health Data Space (EHDS). At the centre of the 2025 EHDS regulation’s three main aims, one is for Europe to better achieve purposes that involve the use of electronic health data to benefit society. Innovation is among the societal benefits. Artificial intelligence (AI) surely provides one of these areas of opportunity.
AI use in healthcare is moving ahead rapidly. The WHO Regional Office for Europe has produced an informative report co-funded by the European Commission. EHTEL has examined the report in depth, and translated the survey results into five key findings. In it there are the implications for implementers. EHTEL adds further value by identifying three top priorities for digital health leaders.
Examining the future of AI in Europe, a World Health Organization (WHO) working group has published a 40-page report on Europe’s AI readiness. EHTEL has selected two specific areas from the report’s five areas of strategic value. They are: clinical documentation and workflow and predictive analytics and risk assessment. EHTEL draws on examples from its own working papers and a Briefing Paper.
Trusted research environments are core components of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) for secondary use of data. Yet they also play a larger decisive role in the primary use of data, with the increased use of artificial intelligence (AI) in supporting clinical decision processes. It is the bridge between primary and secondary uses of data which is now of growing importance!
The session held on 22 June asked three fundamental questions: What do patients, people with long-term care needs, and informal carers need from digital data sharing in integrated long-term care? How can citizen-mediated data sharing be guaranteed? Are current policies and tools answering these needs?

The XIA (Xpanding Innovative Alliance) project is a four-year, European Union-funded Erasmus+ initiative designed to help Europe prepare for the implementation of the European Health Data Space (EHDS). The project has launched its Community of Practice.

Making this vision a reality requires more than technical specifications—it requires the experience, insights and collaboration of the people and organisations who will ultimately implement and use it.
