Organisation description

The core mission of Fondazione Toscana Gabriele Monasterio (FTGM)(Monasterio), a foundation for specialised public research hospitals based in Pisa and Massa (Tuscany, Italy), is to concentrate on clinical excellence in cardiovascular care and rare diseases. Monasterio’s internal BioEngineering department, has 25+ years of experience in IT research and applications in the development of eHealth solutions. It is the provider of electronic health records for the whole Tuscany Region.

As an active member of EHTEL, Monasterio is deeply committed to translating the vision of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) into daily clinical reality. Hospital information systems cannot continue to remain as isolated silos. To deliver continuity of care across borders and power secondary research and artificial intelligence (AI), health data must speak a single, standardised language.

Activities and interest with respect to digital health

Monasterio is working on four main initiatives with four main projects:

• Unlocking data fluidity for patients and research, with the xShare project
• Implementing the European Electronic Health Record eXchange Format (EEHRxF or ‘the format’), with the i2X project
• Closing the interoperability skills gap across Europe, with the XiA project
• Leading the community, through Hospitals on FHIR.

Monasterio believes that digital health transformation cannot occur in isolation. Through its practical experiences of how initiatives can work together, the foundation is helping to build the cornerstone of a connected European healthcare ecosystem.

Monasterio is available to share its collective journey with all EHTEL members, hospital executives, researchers, and technology innovators. Examples include by collaborating on pilot projects or engaging in the Hospitals on FHIR community. Together, interoperability can be turned into better care, faster research, and improved health outcomes across Europe!

Monasterio’s digital health activities are extremely wide-ranging. To name but a few, they include AI and machine learning development, large-scale health data warehouses, electronic health records, interoperability standards (such as HL7, DICOM, and OMOP), cybersecurity, data protection, and patient-reported outcome systems.
