An Intelligence Layer for the EHDS: From Voice to Structured Health Data — State of Play
Member event
News about critical implementing acts to support the EHDS is expected in November 2026. Of course, the EHDS is primarily an enabler. Member States, regions and providers must now focus on building services and technologies that make data work. AI could be a key companion.
Voice-to-text and AI-supported clinical documentation are already entering routine care, turning consultations into structured notes for clinician validation.
A second wave is now emerging: AI-supported semantic structuring is transforming clinical narratives into recognised concepts and codes. The key challenge is to ensure that this transformation happens reliably, transparently and consistently enough to support interoperable health records.
These issues raise important EHDS-related questions:
Can these technologies become the “intelligence layer” between everyday clinical work and the structured European Electronic Health Record Exchange Format (EEHRxF)?
And, consequently, are we now approaching the point where AI can make structured, interoperable health data “happen in the background” — without creating a new burden for healthcare professionals?
This webinar will help participants to:
- Understand the state of play and issues at stake.
- Prepare the ground for the EHTEL January 2027 symposium: “From Data Compliance to Data that Work”.
The discussion will bring together three complementary perspectives:
- Introducing voice-to-text for clinicians : Doctolib has experienced exceptional growth, and is now progressively extending the services it provides to its healthcare customers. Voice-to-text, with the support of AI, is one recently introduced advanced functionality. Anna-Karin EDSTEDT BONAMY will reflect on those new developments, their adoption, their challenges, and what could come next.
- From text-to-code with AI: Sindy VRANCKX will explain how Amaron supports Nexuzhealth, the market leader in Flemish EHRs for hospitals. In her capacity as integration layer/interoperability partner, Sindy will describe the entire workflow (with its structured FHIR data which can be used for many purposes). Google MedGemma LLM is used here for text-to-code. But Sindy will also reflect on new tools which promise voice-to-code. She will highlight the promises, the requirements, and the critical issues for the implementation of an interoperability intelligence layer.
- The European i2X project: Stefano DALMIANI will bring the EHDS implementation perspective to the webinar. He will examine how intelligent tools can contribute to the real-world adoption of the EEHRxF across different healthcare settings. The i2X project is working specifically on real-world EEHRxF implementation, through live demonstrators, and the deployment of digital tools intended to ease the work of healthcare professionals.
